Swine flu latest
According to nhs uk, new cases of swine flu in England have risen by a third, with the latest official figures showing 5,200 new infections in a week. Rates are also up in Scotland and Northern Ireland but have decreased slightly in Wales.
It is unclear whether the upturn will be sustained, but it is thought that the move into the winter flu season and the return of schools may be contributing factors.
There were three more swine flu-related deaths in England and one in Scotland last week. This brings the UK total to 78, with 67 in England, eight in Scotland, two in Northern Ireland and one in Wales
Health advice for the Hajj
Muslims have been issued with health advice about attending this year’s Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, in light of the current swine flu pandemic. The measures, set out by The World Health Organization and the Saudi government, apply to both healthy Muslims and groups who may be more vulnerable to the virus.
The new guidelines recommend that pregnant women, people with chronic diseases, the elderly and children should postpone the Hajj this year for their own safety. Those making the pilgrimage this year will need to be vaccinated against seasonal flu at least two weeks before applying for their visa.
