Staphylococcus
All staphylococci are
catalase +ve. Imp Staphylococci are Staph. aureus and Staph. epidermids.
Staph. aureus
- Major cause of skin infections (form abscess, boils)
- cause surgical wound infections, septicemia and hospital aquired pneumonia
- kawasaki syndrome
- Food poisoning ( production of enterotoxin)
Lab investigations
- form golden yellow colonies
- coagulase +ve
- Ferment manitol and beta hemolytic ( causes lysis of RBCs)
Staph. epidermidis
- cause endocarditis and prosthetic joint infection.
- cause hospital acquired infections
Lab
- coagulase -ve
- form white colonies and are non hemolytic
